Exploring Scent Experiences: An Interview with Artist Koo and Nonfiction Collaboration

Renowned artist Koo Jeong A has collaborated with Korean fragrance brand Nonfiction to create a unique sensory experience that transcends borders and invites viewers on a “scent journey” through different Korean cities. The project, titled “Odorama Cities,” features fragrances that represent the essence of various locations on the Korean peninsula, collected through an open call that garnered 600 submissions.

In an interview with the Post, Koo shared insights into the creative process behind the project, highlighting the importance of scent in triggering memories and emotions. The artist, known for immersive installations that engage multiple senses, explained how scent can unify a world and create layered personal connections.

“Odorama Cities” aims to spark a cross-cultural dialogue and offer visitors to the Biennale a transformative experience that challenges their perceptions of reality. Through the power of scent, Koo hopes to evoke a more ecstatic vision of the world and encourage viewers to imagine their own version of reality within the fabric of the one they inhabit.

In addition to her work with fragrance, Koo is also making waves in the fashion world, having recently been featured in Loewe’s autumn/winter 2023 campaign. The artist’s approach to fashion mirrors her artistic process, with a focus on timeless designs and natural fabrics that can be worn daily and professionally.

As Koo continues to push boundaries with her innovative projects, including a collaboration with a fashion partner for an upcoming outdoor skatepark project in Berlin, her work serves as a testament to the power of art and scent in shaping our perceptions and experiences of the world.
