Israel decides to close down Al Jazeera’s local operations; news broadcaster condemns it as a ‘criminal act’ – Global News

Israeli Government Unanimously Votes to Shut Down Al Jazeera Offices amid Cease-Fire Negotiations

The Israeli government’s unanimous decision to shut down the local offices of Qatar-owned broadcaster Al Jazeera has sparked controversy and condemnation. This move comes at a crucial time when cease-fire negotiations with Hamas, mediated by Qatar, were gaining momentum.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that immediate actions would be taken within 45 days, including confiscating broadcast equipment, preventing the broadcast of the channel’s reports, and blocking its websites. Netanyahu accused Al Jazeera reporters of harming Israel’s security and inciting against soldiers, labeling the network as a “mouthpiece for Hamas.”

This decision marks the first time Israel has taken such drastic measures against a foreign media house. The move is in line with a law enacted last month, allowing the government to act against foreign channels deemed detrimental to the nation. Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel and East Jerusalem, particularly in broadcasting live coverage since the recent conflict in Gaza, will be directly impacted.

Despite the order to shut down its operations in Israel, Al Jazeera’s presence in the Palestinian territories will remain unaffected. The broadcaster’s websites, although announced to be blocked, were still accessible as of Sunday afternoon in Jerusalem.

The closure of Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel raises concerns about escalating tensions with Qatar, a key mediator in the efforts to cease hostilities in Gaza. Al Jazeera swiftly condemned the Israeli government’s action as a “criminal action” aimed at suppressing the free press and concealing alleged Israeli crimes, particularly those involving the killing and arrest of journalists.

In response to the government’s decision, Israeli satellite and cable television providers suspended broadcasts of Al Jazeera. Both the Yes satellite service and Hot cable service complied with the directive to cease Al Jazeera’s coverage within Israeli territory.

The situation continues to unfold, with Al Jazeera reaffirming its commitment to fulfilling its journalistic duties despite the crackdown. The international community will be closely watching the developments as tensions between Israel and Qatar escalate in the wake of this decision.
