South Tama County Applies to Rejoin NICL Conference

South Tama County Seeks Return to NICL Conference

After a decade in the WaMaC Conference, South Tama County is looking to return to familiar territory by rejoining the North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) conference. The district administration sent a formal request to the NICL, citing enrollment decline and travel distance as reasons for the change.

If admitted, South Tama would be the largest district in the NICL, with the next largest school significantly smaller in enrollment. The NICL administrators will discuss the request at their upcoming meeting.

South Tama has a history with the NICL dating back to the 1930s, but left the conference in 2014 for the WaMaC Conference. Now, with changes in the WaMaC Conference and the NICL offering programs the district is seeking, South Tama is eager to return.

In other news, the South Tama Board of Education heard a report on student behavior from Middle School Principal Ben Adams. The district has implemented various intervention systems to address behavior issues, with a focus on improving student connections and academic success.

Additionally, Superintendent John Cain discussed a request from the Meskwaki Nation regarding an access road near the school grounds. The board also approved staff hires, resignations, early graduation requests, and finalized the certified budget for the next school year.

Overall, South Tama County is making strides to improve student behavior, explore conference changes, and address community needs in a proactive manner.
