Speaker Johnson demands Columbia University president’s resignation and warns of potential cuts to federal funding for colleges

House Speaker Mike Johnson Calls on Columbia University President to Resign Over Gaza War Protests

House Speaker Mike Johnson called on Columbia University President Minouche Shafik to resign if she cannot control Gaza war protests on campus and ensure the safety of Jewish students. Johnson threatened to cut federal funding for colleges that fail to create safe environments for Jewish students. The speaker’s remarks were met with boos and heckling from protesters, who chanted slogans in support of Palestine.

Johnson’s delegation met with Shafik and university officials to address the harassment of Jewish students and the pro-Palestinian encampment on campus. The Columbia University Board of Trustees expressed support for Shafik, stating that she is working to resolve the situation while upholding the university’s values.

The protests at Columbia come after Shafik testified about antisemitism on campus before the House Education Committee. Chair Virginia Foxx also threatened congressional action if Shafik does not address the situation. Members of the New York Republican delegation joined Johnson in calling for Shafik’s resignation.

Johnson warned that if colleges do not control such protests, they may lose taxpayer dollars. He also mentioned the possibility of involving the National Guard if the situation escalates. The speaker urged students to return to class and engage in respectful debate rather than intimidating their peers.

The ongoing tensions at Columbia highlight the challenges universities face in balancing free speech with ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all students. The situation remains fluid as stakeholders continue to work towards a resolution.
