Former criminal given opportunity to change life, enrolls in NASA program

Formerly Incarcerated Man Making the Most of Second Chance: From Jail to NASA

SAN ANTONIO – April is Second Chance Awareness Month, and one man is truly making the most of his second chance. Jaime Lopez Jr., formerly arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, is now back in the workforce, attending school, and participating in a NASA program.

Lopez’s journey from a troubled past to a promising future is nothing short of inspiring. After struggling with substance abuse and experiencing a drug-induced psychosis in 2016, Lopez found himself in a downward spiral that led to his arrest in January 2019.

During his 18 months in jail and rehab, Lopez had a moment of clarity that made him realize he needed to change. Missing the birth of his first child served as a wake-up call, pushing him to seek help and turn his life around.

Now, Lopez is not only working as a cook at NOLA Brunch and Beignets but also pursuing his education at St. Philip’s College with a focus on S.T.E.M. He holds an impressive 3.6 GPA and is on track to graduate with honors in 2025.

In addition to his academic achievements, Lopez has been selected to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program. This opportunity has allowed him to work closely with NASA personnel and contribute to organizing a trip to Mars for astronauts.

Looking ahead, Lopez has set his sights on continuing his education at UT Austin and eventually interning at NASA. His determination and resilience serve as a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to turn your life around and pursue your dreams.

As Lopez continues to defy the odds and work towards a brighter future, his story serves as a beacon of hope for others who may be facing similar challenges. It’s a testament to the power of second chances and the transformative impact of perseverance and hard work.

For Jaime Lopez Jr., the sky is truly the limit, and his journey is a reminder that with dedication and support, anything is possible.
