Microsoft Reportedly Developing New, Large AI Model to Compete with Google and OpenAI
Microsoft is reportedly working on a groundbreaking new artificial intelligence (AI) model that is set to rival other industry giants. The new model, known as MAI-1, is expected to have a staggering 500 billion parameters, making it significantly larger than other open source models.
According to a report by Seeking Alpha, Microsoft’s MAI-1 aims to compete with models created by Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. The company has not officially commented on the report, but Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott highlighted the importance of AI models in the company’s products and services.
The team behind MAI-1 is led by Mustafa Suleyman, who joined Microsoft in March after founding DeepMind and serving as CEO of Inflection AI. Microsoft acquired most of Inflection AI’s staff and intellectual property for $650 million in March.
There are speculations that Microsoft could unveil a preview of MAI-1 at its upcoming Microsoft Build developer conference. This move marks a significant step for Microsoft’s consumer AI unit, as Suleyman now leads all consumer AI business under one leader.
