Israel to Summon Ambassadors of Countries that Voted for Full Palestinian UN Membership

Israel is set to summon ambassadors of countries that voted in favor of full Palestinian UN membership for a “protest talk” on Sunday, following a recent resolution at the UN Security Council.

The move comes after the Palestinian Authority announced that it would “reconsider” its relationship with the United States, after Washington vetoed the Palestinian membership bid earlier in the week.

During Thursday’s vote, 12 countries on the UN Security Council supported a resolution recommending full Palestinian membership, while two countries, Britain and Switzerland, abstained. The United States, Israel’s strongest ally, used its veto power to block the resolution.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein stated that ambassadors from France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, the Slovak Republic, and Ecuador will be summoned for a demarche, with a strong protest to be presented to them. Additional countries will also receive a similar protest.

The message to be delivered to the ambassadors will emphasize that any political gesture towards the Palestinians, including recognition of a Palestinian state, is seen as a reward for terrorism, particularly in light of recent events.

The draft resolution called for recommending the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, replacing its current status as a “non-member observer state” since 2012.

Despite the veto by the United States, the majority of the UN’s 193 member states, including 137 according to Palestinian count, have recognized a Palestinian state.

The situation continues to evolve, with tensions running high between various countries involved in the issue. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
