Supporters of socialism urge Spanish Prime Minister to remain in office

Thousands of Socialist Party Supporters Rally in Madrid to Support Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez

Thousands of Socialist Party supporters gathered in Madrid on Saturday to show their support for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is facing a potential decision to step down amid a business corruption probe into his wife’s private dealings.

Sanchez announced on Wednesday that he would take a few days to consider his future as the leader of the government after a court initiated an investigation into allegations against his wife, Begona Gomez. The Prime Minister has vehemently denied the accusations and is expected to announce his decision on Monday.

During a rally at the party’s headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Maria Jesus Montero urged Sanchez to stay on, saying, “Prime Minister, stay, Pedro, stay. We are with you.” Outside, supporters filled the streets, waving flags and playing music in a show of solidarity.

“I hope he continues, because Spain has to continue with him. If not, it scares me. We are afraid of what could come,” said Leonor Romero, a councillor from Huelva. Another supporter, Jose Luis Trigo, expressed his belief that Sanchez will not resign, stating, “He must continue. I think he is not going to resign. He will leave us orphans.”

Opposition parties have criticized Sanchez’s decision to consider stepping down, with the leader of the conservative People’s Party, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, calling on citizens not to be deceived. Madrid’s prosecuting authority has also appealed the court’s decision to investigate the allegations against Gomez.

Sanchez, who came to power in 2018, faces a crucial moment in his political career as he weighs his next steps in the face of mounting pressure. Supporters and opponents alike are closely watching for his decision on Monday.
