House of Representatives Set to Vote on $95 Billion Security Assistance Package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan
In a highly anticipated move, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives is gearing up to vote on a $95 billion legislative package that will provide security assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Despite facing objections from party hardliners, the bill is expected to pass.
The package, which includes funds for Ukraine’s ongoing struggle against a Russian invasion, as well as security assistance for Israel, Taiwan, and allies in the Indo-Pacific, has been a point of contention within the House. House Speaker Mike Johnson, facing threats of ouster from hardline members of his party, has chosen to push forward with the measure.
The White House has expressed strong support for the legislation, stating that passing it would send a powerful message about American leadership on the global stage. President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have both urged Johnson to bring the bill to a vote.
The bipartisan support for the bill was evident in a 316-94 House majority vote to advance it to a final vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has instructed senators to be prepared to work over the weekend if the bill passes the House.
While some hardline Republicans have voiced opposition to further aid for Ukraine, former President Donald Trump has expressed support for the bill, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s survival for the U.S. The legislation includes $60.84 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8.12 billion for the Indo-Pacific.
As the House prepares to vote on the package, all eyes are on the outcome of this crucial decision that will have far-reaching implications for international security and U.S. foreign policy.
