Germany Condemns Increase in Political Violence Following Serious Injury of MEP

Surge in Violence Against Politicians Sparks Outrage in Germany

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has vowed to fight against a surge in violence targeting politicians after a German member of the European Parliament was attacked while campaigning for re-election. Matthias Ecke, a member of Faeser’s Social Democrats (SPD), was assaulted by a group of four people while putting up posters in Dresden, resulting in serious injuries that will require an operation.

The attack on Ecke, as well as a separate incident involving a campaigner for the Greens, has sparked outrage and calls for increased protection for democratic forces in the country. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed shock and sympathy for Ecke, condemning the vicious attack.

The rise in violence against politicians is a growing concern in Germany, with attacks on members of parliament doubling since 2019. Faeser attributed this trend to the verbal hostility of extremists and populists towards democratic politicians, with far-right extremism identified as the biggest threat to German democracy by the BfV domestic intelligence agency.

The surge in support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has further exacerbated the situation, particularly in the eastern states where the party is gaining traction. Greens party politicians have been the primary targets of aggression, with attacks on them increasing sevenfold since 2019.

The escalating political atmosphere has led to concerns among party members, with some reconsidering their involvement in elections due to safety concerns. Measures such as having at least three staff members at information stands for extra safety have been implemented by the Greens in certain regions.

As the country prepares for regional elections in September, the government is under pressure to address the growing threat to democratic processes and ensure the safety of politicians and campaigners. Faeser’s commitment to taking tough action against perpetrators of violence is a step towards safeguarding the democratic values of the nation.
