Trump promises to continue speaking out in court as first week of trial nears end. Catch up on Day 4 highlights.
Donald Trump Frustrated and Weary Four Days into First Criminal Trial as President
The first criminal trial of former President Donald Trump is well underway, and Trump is already showing signs of frustration. After listening to New Yorkers express negative opinions about him, being restricted in what he could say in court, and even being told to sit down by the judge, Trump appeared weary and promised to testify at the trial, which he labeled a “witch hunt.”
Throughout the week, Trump experienced power reversals and accusations turned upside down. Prosecutors allege that he used hush money payments to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, while Trump is attempting to make a parallel case in the court of public opinion.
Despite his frustrations, Trump must remain in court for the duration of the trial, which is expected to last up to six weeks. He accused the district attorney’s office of interfering in the 2024 presidential election by keeping him off the campaign trail. Trump also expressed frustration at being “FULLY GAGGED” after being told to curtail his social media attacks against potential witnesses.
Outside the courthouse, a man set himself on fire in a park facing the court, adding to the drama of the day. Inside the courtroom, prospective jurors were questioned about their ability to be impartial. One alternate juror was excused for anxiety, while another was dismissed after referencing Trump as “the devil” in a social media post.
By the end of the week, a full 12-person jury and six alternates were seated, with opening statements set to begin on Monday morning. Trump’s defense team appeared downcast during the proceedings, with lead attorney Todd Blanche insisting on discussing presidential immunity and other motions, despite the judge’s decision to move forward with the trial.
As the first week of the trial came to a close, it was clear that tensions were running high and that the trial was just beginning. Stay tuned for more updates as the trial unfolds.
