Meta shifts focus from Workplace app to AI and metaverse development
Meta Platforms to Discontinue Workplace App for Customers Starting June 2026, Shifts Focus to AI and Metaverse Technologies
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has announced that it will be discontinuing its work-focused Workplace app in order to shift its focus towards building artificial intelligence and metaverse technologies. The decision comes as part of Meta’s strategy to reshape the future of work and communication.
Workplace, which was first introduced for businesses in 2016, will be shut down for customers starting in June 2026. However, Meta will continue to use it as its internal messaging board. Users will still have access to the app until August 2025, giving them time to transition to alternative platforms.
“We are discontinuing Workplace to focus on building AI and metaverse technologies that we believe will fundamentally reshape the way we work,” a Meta spokesperson stated. The company will be providing Workplace customers with the option to transition to Zoom’s Workvivo product, which is Meta’s preferred migration partner.
The move reflects Meta’s ongoing investment in AI products and metaverse technologies, which it sees as the future of communication and collaboration. The company has been heavily focused on developing these technologies, with the metaverse being touted as the successor to the mobile internet.
Despite the discontinuation of Workplace, Meta has assured customers that billing and payment arrangements will remain the same until August of this year. Workplace currently offers a monthly core plan of $4 per user, with additional add-ons available starting from $2 per user each month.
Overall, Meta’s decision to discontinue Workplace underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and its vision for the future of work and communication. As the tech giant continues to invest in AI and metaverse technologies, it will be interesting to see how these developments shape the way we work and interact in the years to come.
