Iraqi officials are probing the murder of a popular social media influencer | Global News
Investigation underway into killing of social media influencer in Baghdad
The recent killing of social media influencer Ghufran Mahdi Sawadi, known as “Um Fahad,” has shocked the community in central Baghdad. Sawadi, popular on TikTok and Instagram, was shot by an armed motorcyclist in front of her home, leaving many in disbelief.
The assailant opened fire as Sawadi parked her Cadillac in front of her house, taking her phone before fleeing the scene. This tragic incident took place in the same neighbourhood where prominent Iraqi researcher Hisham al-Hashimi was gunned down in 2020, highlighting the ongoing security concerns in the area.
Sawadi’s death is not the first targeting of social media figures in central Baghdad, with Noor Alsaffar, also known as “Noor BM,” being fatally shot last year. The role of social media influencers in Iraq has expanded beyond promoting products to government projects, with influencers now considered key figures at various events.
The Ministry of Defense faced backlash recently for allowing influencers to record videos at sensitive military sites, sparking a debate on the use of social media in official capacities. Sawadi had previously faced legal trouble for posting content deemed inappropriate by the Iraqi government, reflecting the ongoing efforts to regulate online behavior.
The community is mourning the loss of Sawadi, with neighbours recounting the tragic scene of her shooting. As investigations continue into her death, the impact of social media influencers in Iraq and the safety concerns they face remain at the forefront of public discourse.
