Protecting Your Eyes from the Harsh Summer Sun: Tips for Eyecare – Health News

Protecting Your Eyes from Sun Damage in the Summer Months

As the summer months approach, it is important to remember that our eyes also need protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Dr. Uma Malliah, a senior consultant in ophthalmology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi, highlights the potential risks of excessive UV exposure on the eyes, including conditions such as photokeratitis, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

While wearing sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays is the recommended way to protect the eyes, not everyone may be able to wear them. For those individuals, there are alternative options to shield their eyes from the sun. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or cap that provides shade and blocks direct sunlight is one effective method. Seeking shade whenever possible, especially during the peak sun hours, can also help reduce UV exposure.

For those who cannot tolerate regular sunglasses, using UV-blocking contact lenses or wraparound-style glasses with side shields can offer additional protection. It is crucial to be proactive in protecting our eyes, as long-term UV exposure can increase the risk of developing serious eye conditions, including eye cancers.

Regular eye exams and prompt treatment of any eye issues are essential for maintaining good eye health. By taking simple precautions and being mindful of sun exposure, we can ensure that our eyes stay healthy and protected during the summer months.
