Portsmouth Police Chief Celebrates Reduction in Violent Crime, Honors Victims

Portsmouth Police Chief Steve Jenkins is celebrating a decrease in violent crime in the city, but also acknowledging the lives lost so far this year. At a quarterly forum, Jenkins shared that violent crime in Portsmouth has decreased by 30% compared to the same time period in 2023. While this is a positive development, Jenkins highlighted the 18 lives lost in the city this year, with arrests made in seven cases and warrants out for suspects in three others.

Community advocate Calherbe Monel emphasized the need for all of Hampton Roads to come together to address the issue of crime, as it is not limited to one city. Jenkins echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the community’s role in the rebuilding process after a crime occurs. Despite the challenges, Jenkins pointed to increased hiring in the police department as a positive step forward.

As the city continues to work towards reducing crime, both Jenkins and community members are hopeful for a brighter future. With continued effort and collaboration, they believe that Portsmouth can see further improvements in safety and security for all residents.
