Police report decrease in recorded crimes in 2023, but shoplifting incidents increase

Crime Statistics for Dyfed-Powys Police Show Decrease in Total Number of Crimes

The latest police recorded crime figures for Dyfed-Powys Police have shown a significant decrease in the total number of crimes, excluding fraud, in the area. According to the Home Office data, there were 38,842 crimes recorded in the 12 months to December 2023, down from 44,538 in the previous year.

However, not all types of crime saw a decrease. Non-residential burglary, theft from a person, and shoplifting were on the rise, along with slight increases in homicide and death or serious injury by unlawful driving cases. Stalking and harassment remained the most commonly recorded crimes, with 8,298 cases reported in the year to December 2023, a 19% decrease from the previous year.

The data also revealed that theft from a person saw the highest increase, rising by 91% between the two years. Shoplifting and non-residential burglaries also saw double-digit percentage increases.

In terms of other police forces in Wales, North Wales Police saw a 12% decrease in recorded crimes, while Gwent Police saw a 1% drop. South Wales Police, however, recorded an 8% rise in crimes. Overall, police forces across England and Wales saw a 1% decrease in recorded crimes.

Despite the fluctuations in crime rates, Dyfed-Powys Police had the lowest recorded crimes per 1,000 population in Wales, with 74.8 crimes per 1,000 residents. This was lower than North Wales Police, South Wales Police, and Gwent Police.

The data highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to tackle crime in the area, with some successes in reducing overall crime rates but challenges in specific areas such as theft and burglary.
