Men in Michigan charged with labor trafficking crimes by Attorney General

Woman Reclaims Life After Decade of Forced Labor at Convenience Store

A woman in Three Rivers, Michigan, has finally been able to “reclaim her life and take back her control” after being forced to work at a convenience store for nearly a decade without pay. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced labor trafficking charges against three individuals who allegedly trafficked the woman, originally from India, under the guise of marriage.

The three suspects, Ikbahl Machhal, Kartar Chand, and Shila Devi, have each been charged with human trafficking – forced labor and human trafficking enterprise, both of which are 10-year felonies. The investigation involved local, state, and federal agencies, including the Three Rivers Police Department, Nessel’s office, and Homeland Security Investigations.

The victim was allegedly forced to work 8-9 hours a day, seven days a week at the Broadway Market in Three Rivers, owned by Machhal and her in-laws, without receiving any payment. This continued for about eight years until the victim was able to escape with the help of the YWCA Kalamazoo in October 2020.

Three Rivers Police Officer Matt Kilbourn uncovered the scheme after identifying signs of labor trafficking during a hospital visit with the victim. Machhal and Devi have been arraigned in court, with Chand currently at large in India.

Nessel emphasized the importance of recognizing and combating labor trafficking, calling it a “hidden crime that often goes undetected.” Through the collaboration of various agencies and organizations, the victim was able to reclaim her life and receive the support needed to pursue justice against her abusers.
