Austin crime victims group unites to emphasize need for reform

Healing Vigil Hosted by Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice in Austin, Texas

The Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice hosted a powerful healing vigil in Austin as part of the 5th Annual Survivors Speak Healing Vigil Day of Action. Clarence Watson, a survivor himself, shared his story of overcoming a traumatic experience at a young age. The vigil brought together survivors who shared their own stories and emphasized that their traumas do not define them.

The event marked the end of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and provided a space for individuals to come together in unity and support. Each person held a candle, dedicating the light to fellow survivors and themselves. Watson, the Co-Chapter Coordinator for CSSJ in Austin, highlighted the importance of sharing stories and finding ways to heal together.

Looking ahead, CSSJ plans to organize the first Crime Survivors Speak March in Washington, D.C. in September. In the meantime, they are advocating for urgent measures at the state level to help victims and implement public safety solutions. Through their stories and unity, they hope to ignite change and support those who have experienced trauma.

As Watson expressed, listening to someone’s story and offering support can make a significant impact. The vigil served as a reminder of the strength and resilience of survivors, and the importance of coming together as a community.
