Auroras light up night skies globally, forecasted to persist until Sunday
“Severe Solar Storm Supercharges Northern Lights, Lighting Up Skies Worldwide”
The night skies were ablaze with the stunning colors of the northern lights on Friday, as a severe solar storm supercharged the phenomenon and brought the auroras to locations where they are not typically seen. Photos from around the world captured the bright hues of pink, green, and purple dancing across the sky in Europe, the United States, and even as far as New Zealand.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center had issued a warning on Thursday that a series of solar flares and eruptions from the sun could trigger severe geomagnetic storms and lead to “spectacular displays of aurora” on Friday and throughout the weekend. This marked the first severe geomagnetic storm watch issued by the agency since 2005.
The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, occur when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and collide with the atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, creating colorful light displays. While the auroras are typically only visible in high latitudes, the intense solar storm on Friday allowed them to be seen much farther south than usual, with reports of sightings in states like Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.
The cosmic show is expected to continue through at least Sunday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, although the ongoing storm has already caused some reports of power grid issues. NASA also reported detecting another sizable solar flare on Saturday.
Social media was flooded with pictures of the northern lights from various locations around the world, showcasing the beauty and wonder of this natural phenomenon. From Tyrol, Austria to the Penge neighborhood of London, people marveled at the unexpected appearance of the auroras in the night sky.
Overall, Friday’s display of the northern lights served as a reminder of the awe-inspiring power of nature and the beauty that can be found in the night sky.
