J.P. Morgan Chase has introduced a new artificial intelligence-powered tool called IndexGPT, designed to streamline thematic investing. This tool, developed with the assistance of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, generates thematic investment baskets by analyzing keywords associated with specific themes and identifying relevant companies through natural language processing.

Thematic investing, which focuses on emerging trends rather than traditional industry sectors, has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. However, interest in these strategies waned due to poor performance and higher interest rates. J.P. Morgan Chase aims to reignite interest in thematic investing with IndexGPT, offering a more accurate and efficient approach to selecting stocks beyond the obvious choices.

Rui Fernandes, J.P. Morgan’s head of markets trading structuring, sees IndexGPT as a first step in integrating AI across the bank’s index offering. The tool aims to continuously improve offerings, from equity volatility products to commodity momentum products, gradually and thoughtfully.

The deployment of AI in the investment space is not limited to J.P. Morgan Chase. Morgan Stanley recently launched an AI-powered assistant for financial advisers, while venture capital firms are using AI to make smarter investment decisions by analyzing vast amounts of data on startups and market trends.
