Report by Biden Administration Suggests Israel’s Use of US-Supplied Weapons in Gaza May Have Breached International Law
Analysis: Voting Patterns at the UN – Why Pacific Island Nations Supported Israel
The recent United Nations vote on Palestinian membership, rights, and privileges saw a vast majority of nations siding with the Palestinians. However, there were nine countries that voted against the Palestinian quest, including Israel, the United States, Hungary, Argentina, and the Czech Republic.
Israel’s stance against a Palestinian state is unwavering, especially after recent attacks by Hamas. The United States, despite supporting a two-state solution, believes that negotiations should precede any UN vote on the matter. Hungary’s alignment with Israel stems from mutual interests and a shared disdain for liberal democratic values.
Argentina’s new populist President, Javier Milei, has pledged support for Israel and plans to move the country’s embassy to Jerusalem. The Czech Republic’s pro-Israel stance is rooted in historical ties and economic cooperation.
Surprisingly, the remaining countries that voted against the Palestinians were all Pacific Island nations – Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, and Palau. These small developing nations receive generous aid from Israel and Israeli charities, leading them to support Israel in international forums.
Israel’s use of soft power diplomacy, including humanitarian aid and expertise in various fields, has helped secure support from these nations and others. However, on the issue of Palestine, global opinion overwhelmingly favored the Palestinians.
