Peres Jepchirchir Makes History with Women’s Only World Record Win at London Marathon
In a stunning display of athleticism, Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir shattered the women’s only world record at the London Marathon with a remarkable time of two hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds. Jepchirchir’s victory marks her first win at the prestigious event, solidifying her status as one of the top distance runners in the world.
The race was a fierce battle from start to finish, with Jepchirchir facing stiff competition from world record holder Tigst Assefa, Megertu Alemu, and Joyciline Jepkosgei. Despite the intense competition, Jepchirchir managed to pull ahead in the final stretch, clinching the victory and setting a new women’s only record in the process.
“I am feeling grateful. I am so happy for the victory. I was not expecting to run a world record – I knew it might be beat but I did not expect it to be me,” Jepchirchir shared in an interview with BBC Sport. “I am so happy to qualify for the Olympics and I feel grateful. I’m happy to be at Paris and my prayer is to be there and run well to defend my title. I know it won’t be easy but I’ll try my best.”
In the men’s race, Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso Munyao emerged victorious, holding off the legendary Kenenisa Bekele to claim the top spot. The British duo of Emile Cairess and Mahamed Mahamed also put on an impressive performance, finishing third and fourth respectively.
Both Cairess and Mahamed are now set to compete in this summer’s Olympics after finishing well under the qualifying time. Cairess’ time of 2:06:46 makes him the second-fastest British man of all time over the distance, a remarkable achievement for the talented runner.
The London Marathon showcased the incredible talent and determination of elite runners from around the world, setting the stage for an exciting summer of competition. Jepchirchir and Munyao’s victories will undoubtedly go down in history as unforgettable moments in the world of distance running.
