China Congratulates Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC for Securing Absolute Majority in Parliament Polls

China Congratulates Maldives President on Election Victory, Looks to Deepen Partnership

China has extended its congratulations to Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC) party for securing an absolute majority in Sunday’s Parliament polls. The PNC won 68 out of 93 seats, along with coalition partners Maldives National Party (MNP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) winning one and two seats, respectively. This landslide victory gives the PNC a supermajority in Parliament, granting them the power to amend the Constitution.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed its willingness to deepen the “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership” between China and the Maldives. This partnership has been growing since Muizzu’s election as President last year, with the two countries signing multiple agreements and China providing significant financial support to the Maldives.

The victory of the PNC in the parliamentary elections will allow President Muizzu to shape the foreign policy of the strategically located island nation in the Indian Ocean. This comes at a time when the Maldives has been balancing its relationships with both China and India, with Muizzu previously expressing concerns about the presence of Indian military personnel in the country.

As China continues to increase its presence and influence in the Maldives, it will be interesting to see how President Muizzu navigates the delicate balance between the two regional powers. The outcome of this election could have significant implications for the future direction of the Maldives’ foreign policy.
