U.S. Ambassador to India: Accountability in Sikh Activist Assassination Plots a “Red Line”
Title: U.S. Ambassador to India Calls Alleged Assassination Plots Against Sikh Activists a “Red Line”
In a recent statement, U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti expressed satisfaction with India’s efforts to ensure accountability in alleged assassination plots against Sikh activists. However, Garcetti emphasized that many steps are still needed to address the issue, calling it a “red line for America” that must have consequences.
Speaking at a U.S. think tank event, Garcetti highlighted the seriousness of the situation and its potential impact on the relationship between Washington and New Delhi. He stated that the recent discovery of assassination plots against Sikh nationalists in Canada and the United States could be a significant point of contention in the bilateral relationship.
Garcetti noted that a criminal case and indictment had been brought in connection to the plots, and emphasized the importance of holding all responsible parties accountable, including any potential involvement of state actors. He commended India for setting up a commission of inquiry and stressed the need for shared information and consequences.
The U.S. ambassador referenced the reported role of an Indian government official in directing the plot against Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual citizen of the United States and Canada. The White House has also expressed concern over the reported involvement of the Indian intelligence service in the assassination plots.
In response to the developments, Canadian authorities recently arrested and charged three Indian men with the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has expressed concern about the allegations and pledged to formally investigate the U.S. concerns.
The issue remains a sensitive one for both India and the U.S. as they navigate their relationship amidst shared concerns about China’s growing power. The U.S. administration will continue to monitor the situation closely as they work towards accountability and justice for the victims.
