Blinken Issues Strong Criticism of Israel’s Actions in Gaza Conflict

Blinken Criticizes Israel’s Conduct in Gaza War, Warns of Lasting Insurgency

Secretary of State Antony Blinken Criticizes Israel’s Conduct in Gaza War

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — In a series of TV interviews on Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered some of the Biden administration’s strongest public criticism yet of Israel’s conduct in the ongoing war in Gaza. Blinken stated that Israeli tactics have led to “a horrible loss of life of innocent civilians” while failing to neutralize Hamas leaders and fighters, potentially fueling a lasting insurgency.

Blinken emphasized that the United States believes Israeli forces should “get out of Gaza,” but also stressed the need for credible plans from Israel regarding security and governance in the territory post-war. He expressed concern that Hamas has reemerged in parts of Gaza, warning that heavy Israeli action in the southern city of Rafah could leave Israel dealing with a long-term insurgency.

The Secretary of State revealed that the United States has been collaborating with Arab countries and others to develop plans for security, governance, and rebuilding in Gaza, but has yet to see similar efforts from Israel. Blinken cautioned that a military operation in Rafah may have initial success but could result in “terrible harm” to the civilian population without addressing the root issue of preventing Hamas from governing Gaza.

Furthermore, Blinken publicly acknowledged the findings of a new Biden administration report to Congress, which suggested that Israel’s use of U.S.-provided weapons in Gaza may have violated international humanitarian law. He condemned the loss of innocent civilian lives and stressed the importance of adhering to international standards during conflict.

The war in Gaza began on Oct. 7 following an attack by Hamas that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the hostage-taking of 250 individuals. Israel’s offensive has reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 35,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry. U.S. and U.N. officials have raised concerns about food shortages in northern Gaza, leading to a full-fledged famine.

Tensions between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the war, as well as domestic debates over U.S. support for Israel, have escalated. The issue could have significant implications for the upcoming presidential election in November. President Biden recently stated that his administration would not provide weapons for an all-out assault in Rafah.

Blinken’s remarks were made during appearances on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The Biden administration’s stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza continues to evolve, with a focus on promoting lasting peace and security in the region.
