Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized in New York City After Appeals Court Ruling
Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced former movie mogul, has been hospitalized in New York City for a battery of tests after his return from an upstate jail following an appeals court ruling that nullified his 2020 rape conviction. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, confirmed that Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival on Friday.
According to Aidala, Weinstein is in need of significant physical help and is undergoing various tests at the hospital. He described his client as a “train wreck health wise” and mentioned that Weinstein has been dealing with multiple health issues including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems.
The New York Court of Appeals recently vacated Weinstein’s conviction, citing that the trial judge allowed jurors to see and hear evidence not directly related to the charges he faced. As a result, his 23-year prison sentence was erased, and a retrial was ordered. Prosecutors have stated their intention to retry Weinstein on charges of forcibly performing oral sex on a production assistant in 2006 and raping an aspiring actor in 2013.
Weinstein, who is also serving a 16-year prison sentence in Los Angeles for another rape conviction, has been experiencing health problems for some time. Despite his physical ailments, Aidala mentioned that Weinstein remains mentally sharp.
The lawyer criticized the treatment Weinstein received during his transfer from the upstate jail to New York City, claiming that he was denied basic necessities like water and food. Aidala stated that Weinstein is scheduled to undergo further tests at Bellevue before being returned to the Rikers Island jail complex.
Aidala plans to meet with Weinstein on Monday and intends to request a retrial after Labor Day. The lawyer expressed concern over the treatment of his client and emphasized the need for proper care given Weinstein’s age and health condition.
