Five Local Wrestlers Compete in U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials

Five wrestlers with local ties recently competed in the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials, showcasing their skills and determination on the mat. The trials, held in College Station, Pennsylvania, featured a mix of women’s and men’s wrestling, with each athlete vying for a chance to represent the United States on the Olympic stage.

In the women’s wrestling category, Sage Mortimer, who honed her skills at American Leadership Academy, put on an impressive performance in the 50-kilogram weight class. Mortimer, a standout in the challenger tournament, secured a second-place finish after a series of dominant victories. Despite falling short in the final match, Mortimer’s resilience and talent shone through, earning her the title of second alternate for the Olympic team.

Another local standout, Brooklyn Hays, a former Pleasant Grove wrestler with two state titles under her belt, showcased her prowess in the 68-kilogram weight class. Hays faced tough competition but managed to secure a third-place finish, highlighting her skill and determination on the mat.

In the men’s wrestling category, former Utah Valley wrestlers Taylor LaMont and Dylan Gregerson competed in the Greco-Roman tournament. LaMont, a four-time state champion at Maple Mountain, put on a strong showing in the 60-kilogram weight class, ultimately finishing fourth in the challenger bracket. LaMont’s experience as an NCAA All-American and his tenacity on the mat were evident throughout the competition.

The trials also featured some intense rivalries and unexpected upsets, adding to the excitement of the event. From dramatic showdowns to surprising victories, the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials showcased the best of the sport and the dedication of its athletes.
