French Open 2024: Andy Murray and Jack Draper eliminated in first round as Carlos Alcaraz progresses | Tennis News
Andy Murray knocked out in first round of likely final French Open; Alcaraz and Rublev advance
Andy Murray’s final French Open appearance ended in disappointment as he was knocked out in the first round by Stan Wawrinka at Roland Garros. The three-time Grand Slam champion fell to a 6-4 6-4 6-2 defeat to the 2015 French Open winner, who also eliminated him in the opening stage in 2020 and in the 2017 semi-finals.
Murray, who has hinted at retirement after this summer, struggled to find his rhythm against Wawrinka, failing to convert break points and losing each of his service games. Despite the loss, Murray still has the doubles event to look forward to with partner Dan Evans.
Meanwhile, British hopes at the French Open now rest on Cameron Norrie and Evans, as Jack Draper also suffered a first-round exit after a five-set defeat to Jesper de Jong. Norrie is set to face Russia’s Pavel Kotov in his next match.
In other matches, Carlos Alcaraz cruised through his opener, dropping just four games, while Andrey Rublev battled to a four-set victory. Naomi Osaka survived a scare in her first-round match against Lucia Bronzetti, setting up a potential clash with world No 1 Iga Swiatek in the next round.
Former champion Jelena Ostapenko also advanced to the second round after overcoming a slow start. Fans can follow all the action at Roland Garros on Skysports.com and the Sky Sports app, with expert analysis, draws, and schedules available.
