The commitments Donald Trump has made during his campaign for a second term
Trump’s Plans to Use Department of Justice to Attack Critics and Former Allies
Former President Donald Trump has made bold promises to use the Department of Justice to target critics and former allies, as reported by CNN. In a series of videos and speeches, Trump outlined his plans to overhaul the current justice system by removing what he called “radical Marxist prosecutors that are destroying America.”
“I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family,” Trump declared in remarks made in June 2023. He also vowed to “totally obliterate the Deep State.”
Additionally, Trump stated in a campaign video last year that he would reinstate a 2020 executive order to eliminate “rogue” bureaucrats and propose a constitutional amendment for term limits on members of Congress.
To address what he deemed a concerning relationship between technology platforms and the government, Trump announced in a January 2023 video that he would implement a seven-year cooling off period before employees at agencies like the FBI or CIA could work for platforms overseeing mass user data.
Furthermore, Trump pledged to task the Justice Department with investigating online censorship, prohibit federal agencies from collaborating to censor citizens, and withhold federal funding from universities engaged in “censorship-supporting activities.”
During a speech at the Family Research Council’s Pray Vote Stand Summit in Washington, DC, in September 2023, Trump emphasized his commitment to appointing conservative judges, citing Justices Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas as role models.
Trump also vowed to appoint U.S. Attorneys who would differ from what he referred to as “Soros District Attorneys” and others appointed across the country. In another speech in Washington, DC, in September 2023, Trump announced plans to establish a task force to review cases of individuals he believed had been unfairly targeted by the Biden administration, with the intention of granting pardons or commutations on day one.
This move could potentially lead to pardons for individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 insurrection, as Trump hinted at during a CNN town hall in May 2023. It is important to note that only promises regarding judge appointments and congressional term limits align with Trump’s previous campaign pledges.
