The Tragic Death of Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom: A Call for Justice and Democracy in Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand – Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom was a fearless and outspoken advocate for democracy in Thailand. At just 28 years old, she was a prominent figure in the Thai democracy movement, unafraid to challenge the authorities and speak out against injustice.

Dressed in her signature all-black attire at street demonstrations, Netiporn was a powerful presence, rallying crowds with her strong voice and unwavering determination. Despite facing legal and physical risks, she continued to call for royal reform and justice for all.

Tragically, on April 14, Netiporn passed away from cardiac arrest while in custody awaiting trial. She had been imprisoned since January 26 on charges of royal defamation and other offenses, including conducting public opinion polls about Thai royal motorcades.

Even while in detention, Netiporn remained defiant, going on a hunger strike for over 110 days to protest the bail conditions faced by democracy protesters. Her death has sparked outrage and mourning among her friends, supporters, and fellow activists.

Netiporn was a leading member of the underground antimonarchical group Thaluwang, which challenges the power of the monarchy through performance art and provocative stunts. She was one of many activists who have faced legal pressure in Thailand since the 2020 protests.

Human rights organizations have condemned Netiporn’s death as a tragic result of the harsh punishment for royal defamation in Thailand. They have called for fundamental freedoms and the right to express dissenting views without fear of persecution.

The death of Netiporn has reignited calls for reform of the Thai judicial system, which critics say is broken and allows activists to languish in pre-trial detention for extended periods. Opposition party members and democracy advocates are demanding a thorough investigation into her death and meaningful changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Netiporn’s legacy as a courageous fighter for democracy and justice will not be forgotten. Her untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who dare to speak out against injustice in Thailand. As the country grapples with her loss, the call for a more just and democratic society grows louder.
