Study Finds Gradually Reducing Anti-Obesity Jabs Effective in Preventing Weight Regain
A recent study presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice has found that gradually bringing patients off anti-obesity jabs over a longer period could be an effective strategy in helping them avoid regaining weight. The research, which included 2,246 participants from Denmark enrolled in a weight management program, showed promising results in weight loss and maintenance.
The study focused on the use of semaglutide, a drug sold under various brand names such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, which works by targeting the brain’s appetite-regulating area. Researchers found that tailoring dosages to each individual patient and combining lower doses of the drug with lifestyle changes could be an effective approach for weight loss.
Lead researcher Dr. Henrik Gudbergsen, chief medical officer at Embla, highlighted the importance of using lower doses of semaglutide to reduce side effects and ensure that limited drug supplies are used efficiently. The study showed that patients who were gradually weaned off the drug after reaching their target weight experienced minimal weight regain.
Dr. Gudbergsen emphasized the significance of providing support for lifestyle changes and tapering off the drug slowly to help patients maintain a healthy weight. The study also revealed that patients who stopped using semaglutide completely were able to maintain a stable weight with the right support and guidance.
Experts in the field of obesity management have welcomed the findings, emphasizing the need for effective and equitable treatment for individuals struggling with weight management. Katharine Jenner, director of the Obesity Health Alliance, stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of obesity, such as the abundance of unhealthy food and drinks in our environment.
In light of these findings, the study suggests that a combination of tailored medication dosages, lifestyle changes, and ongoing support can be key in helping individuals achieve and maintain a healthy weight. As the global obesity epidemic continues to rise, strategies like those highlighted in this study could play a crucial role in combating weight-related issues and improving overall health outcomes.
