Caitlin Cronenberg, Director of ‘Humane’, Reflects on Her Evolution as a Filmmaker

Caitlin Cronenberg: From Photographer to Director – The Journey to ‘Humane’

Canadian filmmaker Caitlin Cronenberg has finally stepped into the director’s chair after years of hesitation. Known for her photography work, including the cover art for Drake’s album Views, Caitlin initially had no interest in following in the footsteps of her famous father, David Cronenberg, and brother, Brandon Cronenberg. However, everything changed when ‘Schitt’s Creek’ star Annie Murphy approached her for a directing project that eventually led to her feature directorial debut, Humane.

Set in the near future, ‘Humane’ is a family-oriented thriller that explores the consequences of a global ecological crisis. The story follows the York family as they gather for a dinner where patriarch Charles York reveals his enrollment in a controversial euthanasia program. As the adult children grapple with their father’s decision, tensions rise over inheritance and legacy.

Despite the film’s dark themes, Caitlin insists that ‘Humane’ is not a reflection of her own relationship with her father. In fact, David Cronenberg even had a small cameo in the film, which was later cut. Instead, he provided a voiceover for propaganda commercials within the movie.

After completing the primary filming, Caitlin experienced the common filmmaker’s doubt when viewing the assembly cut. However, with reassurance from her brother Brandon, a successful filmmaker in his own right, she pushed through the initial doubts and saw the project evolve into something she was proud of.

With ‘Humane’ marking her directorial debut, Caitlin Cronenberg is poised to make a name for herself in the film industry, following in the footsteps of her talented family members. (ANI)
