DeKalb Crime Data Shows Increase in Juvenile Crime and Decrease in Violent Crime in 2023
The DeKalb Police Department recently released its 2023 crime data, showing an increase in juvenile crime but a decrease in violent crime compared to the previous year. Police Chief David Byrd presented the findings to the City Council, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in addressing these trends.
One initiative aimed at building bridges between law enforcement and the community is Fun Jam in the Park, a youth-centered program launched last summer. The program brings free and family-friendly activities to various parks across the city.
While violent crimes such as homicide and robbery were down in 2023, the city still reported four homicides, including the tragic killings of two young individuals who were former students at DeKalb High School. The cases remain pending in court as the community continues to mourn their loss.
Looking ahead, the police department plans to expand its technological capabilities, including the use of license plate readers to enhance public safety. With the closure of Hopkins Pool for renovations, the department is considering new ways to engage with the community, especially youth, during the upcoming summer.
Chief Byrd stressed the importance of collaboration with community partners, acknowledging that policing alone cannot address all of the city’s needs. As the city continues to grow and develop, Byrd remains optimistic about the potential for positive change through ongoing collaboration and engagement with residents.
