NBC Los Angeles reports that LA Metro leaders will review a safety plan
Increasing Safety on LA Metro: Motion Introduced to Combat Spike in Violent Crime
The Los Angeles Metro system is facing a significant increase in violent crime, with a 65-percent jump in total crime reported in the first three months of 2024. This surge in criminal activity has prompted Metro leaders to introduce a motion aimed at increasing safety measures on the transit system.
Recent violent incidents, including the fatal stabbing of a woman on a B Line train in Studio City and a deadly shooting on a Metro bus in Commerce, have raised concerns about the safety of passengers using the Metro system. In response to these incidents, Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board of Directors Chair Karen Bass has ordered an immediate surge in law enforcement presence on Metro trains and buses.
The proposed motion includes plans to increase public safety personnel on the system and establish a unified command structure to police the Metro system more effectively. Additionally, the motion calls for ensuring that cellular service is enabled and working in all underground Metro rail stations to enhance communication and safety for passengers.
Despite previous assurances about the safety of the Metro system, Mayor Bass publicly acknowledged last week that she no longer believes it is safe. This shift in perception comes as Metro officials grapple with the best approach to policing the transit system, which has traditionally involved partnerships with local law enforcement agencies.
As Metro leaders work to address the spike in violent crime and improve safety for passengers, the proposed motion represents a significant step towards enhancing security measures on the Los Angeles Metro system.
