Fort Dodge Teen Charged with Murder Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charges
A Fort Dodge teenager, Davonquae Jyshon “D.J.” Pettigrew, who was charged with murder following a deadly shooting in the city’s downtown last May, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges. The incident involved the shooting and killing of 18-year-old Patrick Walker and injuring 20-year-old Silas Hall.
Pettigrew, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. However, during a recent plea hearing, he pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter and one count of intimidation with a dangerous weapon. The court accepted his plea, and a sentencing hearing has been scheduled for June 7.
If the judge orders the sentences to be served consecutively, Pettigrew could face up to 20 years in prison for the Class C felonies he pleaded guilty to. Another teen was also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting Pettigrew’s crimes, with her case still active in the courts.
The shooting incident led to further violence, as Pettigrew’s younger brother, 15-year-old Jameel C. Redding-Pettigrew, was fatally shot in what prosecutors described as a retaliatory shooting. The perpetrator, Jamarrion Davis, was arrested, convicted of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of these tragic events, as justice is sought for the lives lost and affected by the violence. Stay updated with the latest news on this case by downloading the free KCCI app.
