Georgia man wanted for sexual offenses apprehended in Honduras: Officials
Georgia Man Wanted on Sexual Assault Charges Caught in Honduras Village
The capture of a wanted sexual assault suspect in a remote village in Honduras has brought a sense of relief to authorities in Georgia. The 25-year-old man had been on the run since November 2023 after warrants were issued following an investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) regarding a sexual assault in Suches.
The suspect was apprehended in the village of La Ceiba, Peru, after a joint effort by the Anti-Maras Police Directorate and Gangs Against Organized Crime (DIPAMPCO). Through surveillance and intelligence work, officers were able to track down the man and arrest him on the outstanding warrants from the United States.
The GBI had issued a BOLO for the suspect in November, believing he may have been heading to Florida where he has family. However, it was later discovered that he had left the country, prompting the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to issue a Red Notice for his arrest.
The suspect faces charges of Aggravated sodomy and Aggravated Assault in Union County. Authorities are now working on extraditing him back to Georgia to face formal charges. More information on the crime(s) that led to the warrants being issued is still being gathered.
The successful capture of the suspect highlights the importance of international cooperation in tracking down fugitives and bringing them to justice. The swift action taken by law enforcement agencies in Honduras demonstrates their commitment to ensuring that individuals accused of serious crimes are held accountable for their actions.
