LAPD Interim Chief Dominic Choi Addresses Crime Trends in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Police Department Interim Chief Dominic Choi addressed the public on Tuesday, revealing some concerning trends in crime rates in the city. While property crime has seen a decrease, homicides, robberies, and burglaries have all increased.

According to Choi, as of April 20, property crime was down 4.1% and violent crimes had decreased by 7% compared to the same period last year. However, there was a significant 9.3% increase in homicides, particularly in the LAPD’s South Bureau area. Choi assured the Board of Police Commissioners that the department is actively working to address this surge in violent crime.

On a positive note, the number of victims who were shot has decreased for the second consecutive week. Choi stated, “We’re seeing a negative number or decreased number in the last two weeks, so citywide our victims-shot incidents have decreased by 8.5% compared to 2023, and by 20.8% compared to 2022.”

Total robberies have increased by 10.5% compared to the previous year, but robberies involving firearms have decreased significantly, from 12% to 2.3%. This decrease is attributed to the LAPD’s focused efforts on combating gun-related crimes.

Burglaries saw a slight uptick, with a 0.4% increase compared to 2023. However, commercial burglaries decreased by 1.3%, while residential burglaries increased by 1.8%.

Motor vehicle thefts also saw a decrease, dropping from 9.6% to 5.5%. Choi highlighted that Kias, Chevrolets, and Hyundais are the top targets for car thieves in the city.

As of April 22, the LAPD’s sworn officers numbered 8,832, with civilian personnel at 2,645 and reserve officers remaining stable at 443.

The LAPD is actively working to address the increase in violent crimes and is hopeful that the positive trends in reducing shootings will continue. Chief Choi emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the residents of Los Angeles.
