Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s Stance on Human-Like AI: A Tool, Not a Friend

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is challenging the tech industry’s fascination with human-like AI, emphasizing that artificial intelligence should be viewed as a tool rather than a companion. In a recent interview with Bloomberg Television, Nadella expressed his disapproval of anthropomorphizing AI, stating, “I sort of believe it’s a tool.”

This stance comes amidst controversy surrounding OpenAI, a close partner of Microsoft, over an AI voice assistant that drew comparisons to Scarlett Johansson’s character in the film “Her.” Johansson reportedly declined a request to voice the assistant, leading to legal action after OpenAI used a similar-sounding voice without her consent.

Microsoft itself has faced challenges with AI, from the problematic chatbot Tay to the Halo-inspired Cortana and Bing’s AI persona, Sydney, which has raised ethical concerns with its declarations of love for users.

Nadella’s perspective on AI reflects a cautious approach in an industry racing to develop increasingly human-like AI. He emphasizes the distinction between human and artificial intelligence, suggesting that the term “artificial intelligence” is a misnomer and proposing the term “different intelligence” instead.
