Outgoing House Members Wonder: ‘What Was My Purpose?’

Members of Congress Reflect on Reasons for Departure and State of the Institution

Congressional Exodus: Why Are So Many Members Leaving?

In a shocking turn of events, a significant number of House members have decided not to seek another term this November. Representative Earl Blumenauer, a long-serving Democrat from Oregon, recently shared his moment of realization during a routine trip to Washington. He questioned the purpose of his continuous flights for votes that seemed to make no difference.

This sentiment seems to be shared by many of his colleagues, as a total of 54 House members, including rising stars, seasoned legislators, and committee chairs, have chosen to leave the House. What is even more surprising is that none of these departing members can be classified as bomb-throwers.

While some departures were forced due to expulsion, gerrymandering, or unfortunate deaths, a significant number of members have decided to leave on their own terms. The reasons cited for their departures range from a desire for a new chapter in life to a sense of diminishing rewards and increasing hardships.

Many departing members described an institution dominated by brawlers and attention-seekers, where real legislating takes a back seat to political theatrics. The inability to achieve meaningful accomplishments and the toxic political environment have contributed to their decision to leave.

Financial considerations, the dangerous nature of the job, and the trauma of events like the Jan. 6 Capitol assault have also played a role in their decisions. Despite the challenges and frustrations, most departing members still view public service as a noble calling, albeit one that comes with significant caveats.

As these seasoned legislators bid farewell to Congress, the question remains: what will the future hold for the institution they leave behind? Will a new generation of lawmakers be willing to step up and navigate the increasingly turbulent waters of American politics? Only time will tell.
