The Dalles High Riverhawks Fall to Scappoose High Indians in State Softball Playoffs
The No. 15-ranked Scappoose High Indians pulled off a stunning upset in the first round of the 2024 state softball playoffs by defeating the defending Class 4A state champion and No. 2-ranked The Dalles High Riverhawks with a score of 2-0. The game, which took place at 16th Street Ballpark in The Dalles, was a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal contest, which The Dalles had won.
Despite their lower seeding and losing record, the Indians managed to outplay the Riverhawks, holding their potent offense to just three hits. The game remained tied after three innings before the Indians scored a run in the fourth and added another in the seventh to secure the victory.
The Riverhawks, who had been dominant throughout the season, were unable to come up with the clutch hits they needed to overcome the Indians’ strong pitching and defense. The loss marked the end of the season for The Dalles, as well as the high school softball careers of several seniors who had been part of two Tri-Valley titles and the 2023 state championship.
The Indians, who had to forfeit 12 games earlier in the season due to an ineligible player, have been on a winning streak since then and will now move on to the next round of the playoffs. The unexpected victory over the Riverhawks has certainly turned heads in the softball community and sets up an exciting future for the Scappoose High softball team.
