In a thrilling Class 1A super-sectional game on Monday afternoon, the Gibson-City-Melvin-Sibley (GCMS) baseball team secured their first-ever state tournament appearance with a 3-0 victory over Annawan/Wethersfield. This historic win marks a significant milestone for the Falcons, who had never before won a super-sectional plaque.
The Falcons’ success was fueled by the outstanding performance of pitcher Elliott, who delivered seven complete innings of five-hit, six-strikeout ball. Elliott’s stellar pitching was complemented by a strong defensive effort from the team, with key plays helping them maintain control of the game.
GCMS took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a double from Elliott and a single from Zach Price. Another run came in the third inning, with Graydon Leonard hitting a sacrifice fly to extend the Falcons’ lead.
Despite being outhit by Annawan/Wethersfield, the Falcons’ defense held strong, making crucial plays to prevent the Titans from scoring. Highlight plays included a diving catch from David Hull and a bases-loaded putout from Zeb Greer to Price at home plate.
