Emory University Student Sues School for Suspension Over Award-Winning AI Tool
An Emory University student, Benjamin Craver, is taking legal action against the Georgia college after being suspended for creating an AI tool to help students study. The tool, named Eightball, was developed by Craver and another student and won the top prize at the school’s startup competition. However, months after their success, the students were punished for allegedly violating the school’s honor code.
The program created by Craver and his co-founder allowed students to upload course materials to a private server, which would then generate study materials like flashcards or practice exams. Despite the initial celebration of their innovation by the university, the honor council later claimed that Eightball was designed with the intent to help students cheat.
Craver, who was suspended for a semester plus a summer, is seeking a jury trial and $75,000 in damages. He hopes that the lawsuit will influence the university to reverse its decision and remove the suspension from his record. Emory University has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
