In Loving Memory of Hollie Collins: A Life Well Lived
Beloved University of Minnesota, Duluth professor, Hollie Collins, passed away on May 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with Leukemia. Hollie, born in Laona, WI in 1938, was a respected educator and researcher in the field of zoology, known for his passion for fish behavior and ecology.
Hollie’s academic journey began at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, where he excelled in basketball and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. He furthered his education at Michigan State University, obtaining a Master’s degree and PhD in Animal Behavior Zoology. In 1964, he joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where he dedicated over 30 years to teaching and mentoring students.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Hollie was a man of many talents and interests. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, beekeeping, woodworking, and mushroom foraging. He was also a dedicated sports fan, never missing a game from youth leagues to professional teams.
Hollie’s love story with his wife, Barbara, spanned over six decades, beginning in kindergarten and culminating in a beautiful marriage. Together, they raised three children and created a life filled with love and memories.
Hollie is survived by his wife, Barbara, his sister, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many close friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 22, 2024, in Floodwood, MN, to honor and remember the life of this remarkable man who touched the hearts of all who knew him.
