Residents in New Haven Neighborhood Bring Concerns to Police Chief Amid Rash of Burglaries and Break-Ins

Residents in the Westville neighborhood of New Haven are taking a stand against a recent surge in burglaries and break-ins, particularly at the Westville Village Apartments. The community has come together to voice their concerns directly to New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson.

Jonathan Ashe, a resident whose son’s car has been targeted multiple times, expressed his frustration with the situation. Despite taking precautions, such as using a steering wheel lock, the car has still been vandalized repeatedly, leading to increased insurance premiums.

The apartment complex management has acknowledged the issue and has taken steps to enhance security on the property. This includes upgrading security cameras, improving lighting in parking areas, and providing overnight on-site security services.

Chief Jacobson met with concerned neighbors at a meeting organized by City Alder Richard Furlow. He revealed a significant increase in car break-ins in the Westville area and pledged to address the issue, despite facing an officer shortage.

To combat the criminal activity, Jacobson plans to increase patrols in the area and assign detectives to a specialized unit focused on robberies and burglaries. One arrest has already been made, with leads on a second suspect.

Jacobson emphasized the importance of community policing and listening to residents’ concerns. He assured the community that their safety is a top priority and promised to work towards a resolution.
