New Analysis Finds Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty More Cost-Effective Than Lifestyle Modification for Weight Loss
A recent study conducted by Dr. Donnangelo and colleagues has revealed groundbreaking findings that support the investment in endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) as a cost-effective solution for weight loss compared to lifestyle modifications. The study, which analyzed data from 860 adults with class I-III obesity, demonstrated that ESG was significantly more cost-effective over the long term.
The analysis showed that the Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) for ESG versus lifestyle modifications was $5,904 per Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY), making ESG a more cost-effective option for patients. In comparison, the cost per QALY of semaglutide (Wegovy) was over $250,000, highlighting the significant cost savings associated with ESG.
Furthermore, the study predicted that ESG would become cost-effective within 30 months and cost-saving after 10 years, particularly for patients with class III obesity. The weight loss achieved through ESG has also been shown to improve or resolve weight-related medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Donnangelo emphasized the importance of these findings in improving access to ESG for patients, stating, “Securing widespread insurance coverage for a procedure like ESG can be a lengthy process. We’re very excited to finally have compelling real-world data that overwhelmingly supports investment in this procedure from the perspective of healthcare savings.”
The results of this analysis will be presented at Digestive Disease Week in Washington, DC, by Dr. Donnangelo. True You Weight Loss, PLLC, founded by Dr. Christopher McGowan, is at the forefront of providing endobariatric weight loss solutions, including ESG, to help patients achieve their weight loss goals.
