Discovering the Joy of Biking to Work: A Duke Employee’s Story
Duke Infectious Diseases Assistant Professor Makes Key Discovery in Commuting with Daughter
Mike Yarrington, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University, recently made a key discovery that not only greatly improved his commute to work but also delighted his 3-year-old daughter, Quinn. Yarrington figured out a route with plenty of sidewalks on the 5-mile journey to his office that passes by Quinn’s daycare. Now, he can bike to and from work with Quinn in tow, picking her up after a day spent working at the Duke Division of Infectious Diseases.
Yarrington’s discovery comes at a time when Duke University is promoting alternative modes of transportation during Bike to Work Week, which runs from May 13-19. With about 750 registered bike commuters at Duke, Yarrington’s story serves as an inspiration for others looking to make the switch to cycling.
While the number of bike commuters nationally has dipped slightly in recent years, the benefits of cycling to work are numerous. Beth Campbell, Parking and Transportation Administrator at Duke, highlights the positive impact on the environment, personal health, and overall well-being that comes with biking to work.
For those considering switching to cycling for their commute, Yarrington and his colleague Nick Turner offer some tips. Mapping out a good route, knowing the benefits of biking, finding biking buddies, and being flexible are all key aspects to consider when making the switch to cycling.
Yarrington and Turner, who both work in Infectious Diseases, have found camaraderie among their colleagues who also bike to work. This sense of community extends beyond the office, as they often participate in cycling events together.
Overall, Yarrington and Turner emphasize the time-saving and health benefits of biking to work, as well as the enjoyment of being outdoors and staying active. Yarrington sums it up by saying, “My inability to tolerate a daily commute in the car is the other major reason” for choosing to bike to work.
As more individuals like Yarrington and Turner embrace cycling as a mode of transportation, the benefits of biking to work continue to be highlighted. For those looking to make the switch, Duke University offers resources and support for registered bike commuters, making the transition to cycling a smooth and rewarding experience.
