Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized in New York City After Appeals Court Ruling Nullifies Conviction

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, has been hospitalized in New York City for a battery of tests following an appeals court ruling that nullified his 2020 rape conviction. Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, confirmed on Saturday that his client was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his return to the city jails.

According to Aidala, Weinstein is in need of significant physical help and is undergoing various tests at the hospital. He described Weinstein as a “train wreck health wise” and mentioned that the former producer has been dealing with multiple health issues including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems.

Weinstein’s conviction was vacated by the New York Court of Appeals on Thursday, citing that the trial judge allowed jurors to see and hear evidence that was not directly related to the charges he faced. The court also overturned his 23-year prison sentence and ordered a retrial. Prosecutors have stated their intention to retry Weinstein on charges of forcibly performing oral sex on a production assistant in 2006 and raping an aspiring actor in 2013.

Aidala mentioned that despite Weinstein’s physical ailments, he remains mentally sharp. He criticized the treatment Weinstein received during his transfer to New York City, claiming that he was denied basic necessities like water, food, and bathroom breaks.

Weinstein is expected to undergo further tests at Bellevue Hospital before potentially being returned to the Rikers Island jail complex. Aidala plans to meet with Weinstein on Monday and advocate for a retrial to occur after Labor Day.

The news of Weinstein’s hospitalization comes amidst ongoing legal battles and public scrutiny surrounding his alleged sexual misconduct. The case has been a focal point of the #MeToo movement, which has shed light on the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault in the entertainment industry.
