Homeland Security in the US Appoints Advisory Board for AI Safety and Security

Homeland Security Department Announces Blue-Ribbon Board on AI and Critical Infrastructure

The U.S. Homeland Security Department (DHS) has taken a significant step in addressing the role of artificial intelligence in critical infrastructure by announcing a blue-ribbon board that includes top tech CEOs. The board, which consists of leaders from companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google parent Alphabet, and Nvidia, will provide recommendations to prevent and prepare for AI-related disruptions in sectors such as transportation, energy, and information technology.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe deployment of AI technology and addressing potential threats to vital services like energy, utilities, and transportation. The board, which includes prominent figures such as Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, and Jensen Huang, will focus on practical solutions for implementing AI in daily life.

With the increasing use of AI-assisted tools, DHS has warned of the potential for larger scale and more evasive cyber attacks on critical infrastructure. The threat assessment also highlighted the development of AI technologies by countries like China that could undermine U.S. cyber defenses.

The 22-member board, which includes CEOs from various industries and government officials, will hold its first meeting next month with quarterly meetings planned for the future. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in safeguarding national security and public safety.
