Senate Passes $95 Billion Foreign Aid Package for Ukraine and Israel
The Senate passed a $95 billion foreign aid package on Tuesday evening, a critical move that will provide military supplies to Ukraine in its fight against Russian invasion and to Israel in its conflict with Hamas. The bipartisan coalition approved the bill by a 79-18 margin, signaling a united front in support of aiding these key allies.
Unlike the House, where the bill faced GOP infighting, the Senate passage went relatively smoothly. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called it “an extremely important day in the history of our country and of the free world,” emphasizing the significance of the aid to Ukraine and Israel.
The bill, which also includes aid to the Indo-Pacific and provisions regarding TikTok, received support from former naysayers who flipped their votes. However, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas voted against the bill, citing the lack of provisions for the southern border as his decisive reason.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged his colleagues to pass the bill quickly, emphasizing the urgency of providing aid to allies in need. McConnell criticized the delay in resuming aid to Ukraine, stating that it has strained the prospects of defeating Russian aggression.
Overall, the passage of this foreign aid package represents a crucial step in supporting key allies and addressing global conflicts.
