Arvind Kejriwal, Diabetic Leader of Delhi, Receives Insulin Injection in Jail
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal given insulin jab in prison
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s health concerns have taken center stage as prison officials in the Indian capital administered an insulin jab to him after his sugar levels spiked. Kejriwal, who has been in Tihar jail since his arrest on 21 March on money laundering charges, is a diabetic, raising concerns about his well-being among his supporters.
The arrest of Kejriwal just weeks before India’s general election has sparked controversy, with critics alleging political motivations behind the action. The Indian government, however, maintains that investigative agencies are simply carrying out their duties.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which arrested Kejriwal, accused him of deliberately consuming excessive mangoes and sweets to raise his sugar levels in a bid to secure bail. Kejriwal and his party vehemently denied these allegations, pointing fingers at the prison authorities for failing to provide proper medical treatment.
In a letter to the prison authorities, Kejriwal highlighted his deteriorating health condition, stating that his sugar levels were consistently high and demanding insulin for the past 10 days. Following a court order, doctors from Delhi’s premier hospital AIIMS prescribed the insulin jab, leading to a war of words between Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP accused AAP of trying to garner sympathy for Kejriwal during the ongoing general election, while Kejriwal labeled his arrest as “illegal” and criticized the investigation for lacking specific charges against him. This development comes amidst a larger controversy surrounding Delhi’s alcohol sales policy, in which several AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, have been arrested.
As the political drama unfolds, the health of Arvind Kejriwal remains a point of contention, highlighting the intersection of health concerns and political maneuvering in India’s high-stakes election season.
